ARC Sports Performance is an out-of-network sports physical therapy practice located in Berlin, Connecticut. ARC stands for Athletic Rehabilitation and Conditioning, and the practice was built to bridge the gap between recovering from an injury and being prepared for the physical demands of everyday life, training, and/or sport. Every session is one-on-one with Justin Marceau, PT, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS, a doctoral-level orthopedic specialist who handles both the rehab and the strength and performance training.

Who does ARC Sports Performance work with?

ARC Sports Performance works with athletes and active individuals of all levels. This includes high school, college, and professional athletes, as well as adults who want to stay active, get stronger, and get back to the activities they enjoy. You do not need to compete in a sport to work with us. If you have an injury, have recently had surgery, want to get back to exercising, or are just looking to move and perform better, we can help.

You also do not need to be injured. We offer performance assessments, injury prevention programs, and ongoing sports physical therapy for individuals who want to address weaknesses before they turn into an injury and stay at their best.

How is ARC Sports Performance different from other physical therapy clinics?

Insurance-based clinics work within real limitations. Visits are commonly short, the physical therapist's attention is shared between multiple patients, and coverage usually ends once the patient is pain-free. For a lot of people, those clinics can get them pain-free; however, this only gets them part of the way back to their sport or training goals.

ARC Sports Performance was built around a different standard. Every session is one-on-one, and no insurance timelines are dictating how fast or slow someone progresses. Progression is based on healing timelines and on the patient meeting specific strength and movement standards versus the number of visits that were approved. The rehab is also built on strength and conditioning principles, so patients begin lifting and training as soon as it is appropriate, rather than spending unnecessary time on exercises that no longer challenge them or support their goals.

Throughout the process, patients learn why each exercise is in their program and how to modify and progress it on their own. That way, they have the knowledge to keep training and stay active later on in their lives. The goal is not to stop at pain-free. It is to get stronger and perform better than before the injury.

We also have the unique ability to provide transitional care. For many patients, especially athletes returning to their sport or individuals recovering from surgery, the transition from completing physical therapy to training independently can feel overwhelming. Patients can continue working with us on their strength and conditioning as they get back to full training and competition. Since the same person who ran their rehab is running the training, nothing about their injury or history gets lost, and the training can be adjusted if something comes up along the way.

Insurance and payment

ARC Sports Performance is an out-of-network provider, meaning we do not take insurance directly. This was a deliberate decision. In an insurance-based model, a lot of the decisions about care are made by the insurance company versus the physical therapist. The number of visits is commonly limited, sessions are often shortened or shared between multiple patients to keep up with reimbursement, and coverage usually stops once the patient is pain-free, even if they are nowhere near ready to return to their sport. Going out-of-network allows the decisions about care to be based on what the patient needs. It means every session can be one-on-one, the time can be spent on actual training and progression, and care can continue until the patient is truly ready rather than when their visits run out.

Patients pay at the time of their visit, and we provide a superbill that can be submitted to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend contacting your insurance provider to understand your out-of-network benefits before starting.

What to expect at the first visit?

The first visit includes a comprehensive evaluation, a discussion of your goals, and treatment to improve movement and tissue quality. From there, a plan is put together based on what you need to get better, whether that is returning from surgery, working through an injury, or improving your performance.
